THE GOSPEL

Through death, Jesus destroyed him that had the power of death (the devil) and delivered those who were subject to bondage all their life through fear of death. (Hebrews 2:14-15)

Short version

Sin and Death shake hands
and the devil’s heart smiles

The Holy Bible is clear and simple about it: Sin brings death. We die because we sin, Sin is the source and reason for death.

God says it at the start with Adam and Eve (Genesis 2:17), He says it in the middle with Ezekiel (Ezekiel 18:4) and He says it at the end with Paul (Romans 6:23), and in fact it says it all over the place! Death is very much a Biblical theme from Genesis to Revelation, and since Adam, Death has been our enemy but also has been God’s….. such a strong enemy that it will be the last standing of all of God’s enemies God will annihilate and the last thing after which all things will be restored as God originally intended and when all of God’s promises will come together forever. (1Corinthians 15:26; Revelation 20:14; Revelation 21:1-5).

One step to the back
gets to show your foe

Lets walk backwards a little bit. We now know what the end plan is, but we need to walk the process so we see the grand scheme and know where we’re at.

Since the last enemy is Death, which enemy comes before that? Scripture explains what leads to death:
– “Sin is the sting of death”
– “Sin pays with death”
– “Sin gives birth to death”
(1Cor 15:56; Rom 6:23; James 1:15)

Sin is definitely an enemy of God!!

Don’t fool yourself;
we’ve all been there

James 1:14-15 goes one step further, and explains the process that leads to death when someone

is lured away and enticed.
and tempted by their lust
then lust conceives and bears sin
and accomplished sin brings forth death

That’s exactly what happened to Eve….. and each one of us:
she was lured away by the devil and enticed by the fruit, then she was tempted by her lust (good for food, for the eyes and for wisdom), her lust planted the seed of sin in her and nurtured it like a growing foetus, and finally she actuated the sin, condemning her to death.
This became a classic behavior for all her descendants as far as you and me, and therefore we have all been condemned to death, for we all have sinned (Romans 5:12).

The lust of the flesh is also an enemy of God! (Romans 8:6-8)

The devil you know
is not always better

In fact, it might not even be the one you think you know!
The devil isn’t evil only because he does evil but more importantly because he causes you to do evil. The world is his and he does with his world whatever he pleases (2 Corinthians 4:4, Luke 4:6). He may have lied to Eve, but Eve is who that sinned. He tempted her with her environment like he tempts us with the things in his world, appealing to the lust of the flesh to lure us away that we may produce fruit to death through sin. When we bear sin through lust we bear the devil within us who loves his world (1John 2:15-16).

Don’t you know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God (James 4:4).

I’d say it’s pretty clear that Satan and his world are both enemies of God!!

Basically…..

Let’s recap a little: There are 5 enemies identified in the Bible:

The Devil
his world
Fleshly lust
Sin
Death

The devil uses his world to attract a person’s fleshly lust, and that person who nurtures that lust then sins and is condemned to death. Example: The devil used the fruit to attract Eve’s lust, Eve nurtured that lust and ate and was condemned to death. We’ve all fallen into that trap and no one has escaped so we are all condemned to death. We all die because we all sin (Romans 5:12; 7:24)

Now you know the bad news
come & hear the good news!

Jesus, the Son of God, died too, he was human too, but unlike us, God did not keep him dead, God, in fact, declared him righteous by bringing him back to life, since he did not deserve to die because he never sinned. (Romans 1:4; Acts 2:24)

The lust of the flesh is absolutely central to the whole problem. God can obliterate Satan and his world but man will still find ways to sin because of their lust for glory, for food or anything else. This lust is what gives Satan his power to make people sin and without it he has no power over anyone anyhow. Death can only be defeated with a life without sin, and sin can only be defeated with a life without lust, and that is what Jesus did!

His victory over lust defeated sin and therefore death, and disabled Satan and his world.
He conquered all!
He sacrificed his life to God and died unjustly so God resurrected him and gave him authorithy over all 5 enemies and over all other things, in Heaven and on Earth. He now can set up a kingdom that will restore all things and completely purge God’s creation from Satan’s influence and from lust and eliminate death forever.

The victory of Jesus Christ is indeed the Good news and salvation for our soul!
